Ten years ago, traveling to Iceland wasn’t really a thing. I’d never heard much about the place, and it was definitely not at the top of my list. Fast forward a few years, and it’s all people are talking about. It’s topping all the lists of must-see destinations, and it even managed to sneak its way onto my list as well. Now, I’m an LA girl, born and bred, and winter near the Arctic Circle was not an option I was willing to entertain. So, summer it was. And, after five fantastic days in what is hands-down one of the most beautiful places I have had the pleasure to visit, I can confidently say that summer is the best time to visit Iceland.
With each summer hotter than the last, August is a month that most people have come to dread. So, a chance to enjoy the cool, crisp autumn-like weather in Iceland is just what the doctor ordered. Summer days there are usually in the mid-50s, but the temperature can spike up to the high 60s. And, its proximity to the Arctic Circle means that you can enjoy the midnight sun, giving you long days to travel around and see all the breathtaking sights this island nation has to offer. If you visit Iceland at the end of the summer in August/September, it will start to get dark around 10pm, and you could get lucky and see the first twinklings of the Northern Lights.
I loved my Blue Lagoon experience in Iceland’s most famous geothermal spa!
Food – Iceland is expensive, VERY expensive, especially food. So be prepared to look out for different options while you’re travelling. In larger towns look out for street food and try pylsa (hot dogs) with the lot for a hearty lunch. I found my cheapest meal in IKEA – a plate of meatballs that was better than I would get back in LA!
Transportation – Car rental really lets you focus on seeing what you want to see when you want to see it. Tours can be great, but the flexibility of having your own transport means if an attraction is super-busy, you can reroute to come back later when there are less people around.
Other – While summer weather ranges from 50 to 60 degrees in the summer, you’ll be packing cold-weather clothing. Just remember to throw in your swimsuit and a light towel. A dip in hot thermal pools is an amazing experience that you won’t want to miss.
Suggested daily budget – $90-$100 USD /11,000-12,500 ISK (Icelandic Króna). Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a little, cooking most of your meals, and using local transportation. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!
